nautilus: right-hand-side icons--how?

Hi.

I, after my long years of Mac-bashing, have come to the conclusion that Apple was right: the desktop icons should be on the right-hand-side. My current state of affairs is this:
Debian sarge/main; Gnome 2; Metacity; Nautilus
I've tried googling for `{metacity, nautilus} {right hand side icons, tweaking}', but nothing useful has turned up.

Does anyone know whether or not this can be done, and if so, how?

Thank you,

Jonas Kölker

Have you tried just moving them there?

Yes. This has two drawbacks:
(1) new icons aren't placed there, they're placed on the left.
(2) "align by name" moves them all back to the left.
