NagiosGrapher: any perl expert to help interpret error?

I'm running Debian 4.0. When I execute './configure', I have the following error:

checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for gawk... no
checking for mawk... mawk
checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl
./config.pld: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
./config.pld: line 2: `<Layout debian>'

checking for choosen layout... default
checking if user www-data exists... found
checking if group www-data exists... found
configure: creating ./config.status
config.status: creating Makefile
config.status: creating lib/NagiosGrapher.pm
config.status: creating nagios_grapher
config.status: creating cfg/ngraph.ncfg

Content of ./config.pld

# layout for debian package install
<Layout debian>
(test "x$prefix" = "xNONE" || test "x$prefix" = "x") && prefix=/etc/nagios2
nagios_config=/etc/nagios2/nagios.cfg
nagios_config_cgi=/etc/nagios2/cgi.cfg
nagios_images=/usr/share/nagios/htdocs/images
nagios_images_logos=/usr/share/nagios/htdocs/images/logos
nagios_folder_cgi=/usr/lib/cgi-bin/nagios2
perl_inc=/etc/perl
nagios_contribution=/usr/share/nagios/contrib
ng_config=/etc/nagios2
ng_config_sub=${ng_config}/ngraph.d
ng_daemon=/var/run/nagios_grapher
(test "x$ng_srvext_file" = "xNONE" || test "x$ng_srvext_file" = "x") && ng_srvext_file=/etc/nagios2/serviceextinfo.cfg
ng_srvext_dir=/etc/nagios2/serviceext
(test "x$ng_interface_pipe" = "xNONE" || test "x$ng_interface_pipe" = "x") && ng_interface_pipe=/var/lib/nagios2/ngraph.pipe
(test "x$ng_logfile" = "xNONE" || test "x$ng_logfile" = "x") && ng_logfile=/var/log/nagios2/ngraph.log
ng_rrd=/var/lib/nagios2/rrd

Content of config.layout

## Layoutfile

# layout for debian package install
<Layout debian>
prefix: /etc/nagios2
nagios_config: /etc/nagios2/nagios.cfg
nagios_config_cgi: /etc/nagios2/cgi.cfg
nagios_images: /usr/share/nagios/htdocs/images
nagios_images_logos: /usr/share/nagios/htdocs/images/logos
nagios_folder_cgi: /usr/lib/cgi-bin/nagios2
perl_inc: /etc/perl
nagios_contribution: /usr/share/nagios/contrib
ng_config: /etc/nagios2
ng_config_sub: ${ng_config}/ngraph.d
ng_daemon: /var/run/nagios_grapher
ng_srvext_file: /etc/nagios2/serviceextinfo.cfg
ng_srvext_dir: /etc/nagios2/serviceext
ng_interface_pipe: /var/lib/nagios2/ngraph.pipe
ng_logfile: /var/log/nagios2/ngraph.log
ng_rrd: /var/lib/nagios2/rrd
</Layout>

If the error './config.pld: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'' refers to '(test "x$prefix" = "xNONE" || test "x$prefix" = "x") && prefix=/etc/nagios2' in ./config.pld, what does it mean?

Thanks.

well 1) that's nothing to do with perl and 2) that's not line 2, you're looking at line 3.

Thanks and looking at the correct line 2 '<Layout debian>', any clue on what could possibly be the cause of the error 'syntax error near unexpected token `newline'' ?

well, config.pld looks like a bash include file, just a bash script which sets variables. if it is just bash executing it, then running "<Layout debian>" as a bash command would choke it...
