N00b: How to install GNOME or KDE?

i need to work with a linux machine (red hat AS 3.1), but when i started it, it will go to a text promot only, if i put my root id/passwd, i can log in, but only text -- no GUI!

I wonder what I need in order to install the GUI , like GNOME or KDE.
