Mythtv backend on Red Hat 9
 

Hi,

I'll start by saying ... yes Red Hat 9 is pretty old. However I have a Promise SX4 card that will only run under RH9, so that's what I'm using. Any questions on that, please refer to my previous posts about that hardware.

Anyway... my file server runs beautifully. But I want to run a mythtv backend on it. I've got heaps of raid5 storage, dual cpus, plenty of ram, mysql, and httpd, but nobody seems to have the mythtv rpms for RH9 or even Fedora Core 1. I'd be happy with either, it's easy enough to get stuff to FC1 level anyway (the problems with my hardware start with kernel 2.6) My frontend is not a problem, it runs FC6 no problems, looks great on my plasma tv, the windows media center remote is working, my network is fine, i would simply prefer to run the database and web server in my back room rather than in the tv room.

Any help on this front would be appreciated. I'm happy to download stuff, or even pay postage and media costs if someone has the necessary software.

I see two possibilities.

1. Promise SX4 is a software RAID with some hardware acceleration. Give up the acceleration and use Linux kernel RAID, then you can use any distro.

2. Build MythTV from source.

Unfortunately the SX4 card doesn't work at all with 2.6 kernels - the filesystem gets corrupted (ext3, jfs, xfs - anything I've tried), even with no sort of raid configured at all. I've tried Gentoo, Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse and had the same problem with all... in fact Fedora was the only one that actuallly completed the install! So it's not really a case of giving up the acceleration, rather the fact that the OEM drivers only work with a 2.4 kernel and are only pre-compiled for Red Hat 9 or equivalent.

I've embarked on the process of building mythtv from source. It seems to be coming together ok so far, I'm just lacking the time to finish it off.
