MythTV and MySQL database on same Computer
 

Hey all. I was just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to run MythTV on the same box as the required MySQL server, or do I need a seperate database server? Also, for the database instructions for setting it up (instructions given at mythtv.org), will the instructions for Fedora Core work on CentOS (since RHEL and Fedora Core are very similar)?

Same box is fine. As a rule it never matters where it is running, unless it's just that it would run too slowly on a single machine. Just put "localhost" as the database server name to connect to.

I have never heard of CentOS, but in general there are only really two types of Linux distro - those based on Redhat, and those based on Debian. So instructions are pretty interchangable within these groups. Even going from one group to the other isn't that hard - it's only really the package management and a few file locations that change.

Anyways, CentOS is identical to Red Hat Enterprise Linux except it doesn't include support or Red Hat Network.

Cause Fedora isn't identical to RHEL and only has a year of support as opposed to 7 years with CentOS. (CentOS is built using the source RPMs for RHEL). Plus, like RHEL, it tends to be more stable than Fedora. Also, RPMs compiled for RHEL will run on CentOS.
