Mystery, screen goes black, leaves gnome menu items only
Running 16.04 Ubuntu with gnome desktop, x1650 video card.
Randomly the browser or any apps just disappear to black. Put mouse to upper left corner, now invisible apps shrink and edged with blue lines. Apps remain black. Black as black can be, nothing visible. To fix, I log out and log in. While logging out app windows appear then proceeds to log in screen. This is happening every few days, sometiomes multiple times a day, it is very annoying. I see this occur while running google chrome. |
You can go to
Code:
chrome://gpu/ |

I took a picture of the black screen. If I start a terminal, only the top bar is visible.

Does show one error at bottom of list
Code:

What ever ships with Ubuntu.
The video card is an older PCIE AMD card, x1650, so then using the free radeon driver. It quit twice this am, so I switched to Firefox. So far no crashes. The card may be 'fully supported', according to them, but it has this bug, maybe with Chrome, and researching it, that error I see as listed, others have the same troubles. Quote:

Code:

Been 2 days on Firefox and no black turning screens, So its a chrome browser thing this bug. The bug does something to affect the entire video system of the OS.
When it happens even my desktop screen background turn black, leaving only the gnome menu items visible. |
Firefox does not crash my computer like Chrome. Still been working fine.

Updating, Chrome has stopped crashing. All sorts of updates have come by, so maybe they fixed it or inadvertently without their intention it is working.
