mysql times out over ssl with stunnel

I am trying to connect to my mysql server, via stunnel on port 3309.

I have the firewall off on both servers, but cannot connect from the client to server on port 3309.

In stunnel.log it show the client connecting to the server, but the mysql prompt is not returned.

And a php script will time out when trying to make the database connection.

I used the method described here:
http://www.edna.narrabilis.com/2006/...er-and-client/

This is what stunnel.log on the server shows:
2010.02.13 21:49:44 LOG7[21717:3086007184]: Connection from xx.xx.xx.xx:42237 permitted by libwrap
2010.02.13 21:49:44 LOG5[21717:3086007184]: mysqls connected from xx.xx.xx.xx:42237
2010.02.13 21:49:44 LOG7[21717:3086007184]: SSL state (accept): before/accept initialization

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Nevermind, I had to connect locally, and not remotely, and let stunnel forward the connection remotely.
