MySQL start Newbie

Hello and thank you already,

So I have just loaded on MySQL from my Suse 10.0 disc and typed in mysql at bash. Permission Error!
So I have read throught the MySQL documentation but I feel very lost now. I have tried to make a password for mySQL using the
Code:
>mysqladmin -R root password '0711'
but it says that it cannot connect to the mysql.sock. But when I try to load mysql as I said earlier I cannot log in due to permissions!
So what do I have to do? If someone could tell me really slowly and in that sort of SQL: for dummies way!

PS I did the 'addgroup mysql' and the 'chown mysql' things that the mysql documentation says.

cheers,

PB

You need to start the server first. Generally there will be an init script to start it, else you can just try "mysqld_safe". After the server is started you can set your passwd, then use "mysql -u<user> -p<passwd>" and start creating your tables etc.
