mysql running but now showing under nmap

I run a Fedora Core 2 box, and have mysql 3.23 running.

I run the following command and it doesn't show mysql, why is this?

Code:
[root@localhost root]# nmap -v localhost

Starting nmap 3.50 ( nmap site address ) at 2005-03-30 07:07 EST
Host localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1) appears to be up ... good.

my real goal is to see what port mysql is running and then ultimately see if thats the reason i can't remotely connect to mysql (i'm just using the defualt in my connection attempt).

I check my /etc/my.cnf and it only shows
Code:
[mysqld]
innodb_data_file_path=ibdata1:10M:autoextend
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib

[safe_mysqld]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

By default mysqld uses port 3306. Try:
Code:
nmap -sS localhost
to see if it's indeed running
To be able to remotely connect to mysql-server you must alter the user table of the mysql database to give the appropriate permissions

Regards
