Try this at the command line for the password issue.

root #> mysql -u root

mysql > UPDATE mysql.user SET Password = PASSWORD('your-password') WHERE User = 'root';

See if that helps.

I get the Following :

[root@pbchs_mysql ~]# mysql -u root
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

Then I tried :

[root@pbchs_mysql ~]# mysql -u root -p
Enter password:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Then I tried this ( REALLY WEIRD ) - [ NO USER OR PASSWORD ]

[root@pbchs_mysql ~]# mysql -u -p
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 21 to server version: 4.1.7

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql>

AFTER I got to the mysql like that I tried the update u told me and I get this :

mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('my_psw') WHERE User='root';
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'mysql'

--------------------------------------

Then I tried loging into mysql with other user name and I cant, only when I type MYSQL it goes into it but it seems that im not loged as any user. I get the following when I try to UPDATE PASSWORD.

mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('my_psw') WHERE User='nemo';
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'mysql'
mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('my_psw') WHERE User='root';
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'mysql'

ANy Idea ?
Do You Think I should try to install PHPMYADMIN ?

Thank You.

Actually, that was my nest suggestion. I use phpMyAdmin and it works well. You should be able to do everything you need in there. I use that or the MySql Administrator that is available at the MySQL web site. I have only done the LAMP thing on Suse 9.2 and it worked perfectly. I followed a really good how-to from novell. I am NOT a MySQL expert/sort of expert/....more or less a basic user. Those errors you get seem odd. I don't know what those problems could be. Sorry, can't be much more help.

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/595.html

See if there is anything in there that you could relate to.

Then I have a doubt, I think your mysql socket cannot connect with localhost at port 80. BTW, have you configured your localhost other than port 80? What distribution do u use? (It is the right time to fill up the user details of you, please do that). In fedora core 3 it stays in /var/lib/mysql/mysql.so, you may search it where that 'mysql.so' resides. Then run 'netstat -anl' command from root so that you can locate if your socket can connect your localhost or not.

I'll try sending it again, but it might be getting blocked by your ISP because of the *.bz2 (or zip format in general). I'll try again.

edit- Ok, sent again at 12:53pm est time. I sent it to my other account and i got it.

Ok I have installed phpMyAdmin and I get this error!!!

Welcome to phpMyAdmin 2.6.2

phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in config.inc.php and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.
Error

MySQL said: Documentation
#1130 - #HY000Host 'pbchs_mysql.palmbeach.k12.fl.us' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server

------------------ My Guess is that I have not created mysql user name and password and I have NO IDEA where to do that ... no I feel stupit!!!
Any help ?

Thanks

actually an easy way would be sticking the password to the -p such as:

[root@pbchs_mysql ~]# mysql -u root -pTHEPASSWORD

It would probably help others googling for this same problem if you actually tell people how you fixed it.
