MYSQL Problems

Hey not to familar with linux but i just installed it and im trying to run mysql as a command, i'm trying to change passwords for it and stuff but every mysql command i type i get back this

[root@localhost ~]# mysql
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
[root@localhost ~]#

you probably didn't run the daemon first, so try starting it first by typing :

mysqld

and then try to connect to it by typing :

mysql
