Mysql Problems

Hi guys, I want to run Mysql with the --old-passwords because I have a password handling problem but when I run /usr/bin/mysqld_safe --old-passwords I'm getting this error

~# /usr/bin/mysqld_safe --old-passwords
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
mysqld_safe[2523]: started
STOPPING server from pid file /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
mysqld_safe[2529]: ended

I'm using Debian Sarge 3.1 and mysqld Ver 4.0.24
