MySQL ends on start.

I just installed MySQL (version 4.0) following the instructions that came with it.
Now it all went well. Great installation instructions. But now when I try to start MySQL like I'm told in the installation instructions:
Code:
bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
I get this output:
Code:
anti@atheisticfaith:/usr/local/mysql$ bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
bin/mysqld_safe: line 306: /usr/local/mysql/data/atheisticfaith.err: Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `/usr/local/mysql/data/atheisticfaith.pid': Permission denied
bin/mysqld_safe: line 312: /usr/local/mysql/data/atheisticfaith.err: Permission denied
tee: /usr/local/mysql/data/atheisticfaith.err: Permission denied
040322 01:26:12 mysqld ended
tee: /usr/local/mysql/data/atheisticfaith.err: Permission denied

anti@atheisticfaith:/usr/local/mysql$ su
Password:
atheisticfaith:/usr/local/mysql# bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 1939
atheisticfaith:/usr/local/mysql# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
040322 01:26:29 mysqld ended
Is it normal, by the way, that I have to log in as root or did I fuck up the permissions? More importantly, though, why does it end as soon as it is started?
Thanks.

Try:
chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql
(or wherever your mysql directory is).

Thanks, but I'm still getting both permission troubles when running as non-root and immediate ends when running mysql. :/

What do you mean by permissions problems... mysqld should be started as root, but once the mysql daemon is started you should be able to log in as the root mysql user as any user on your system (ie with the mysql command line client).

Kovacs, thanks. I was just wondering about that. Still having problems with the mysql service ending as soon as it's started though... o_O

Did you do the chown -R /usr/local/mysql? Also I don't start mysqld as the mysql user myself, I always start it as root (ie without specifying the user).

Yes, I tried chown -R mysql.mysql /usr/local/mysql. Running it as root without specifying a user gives the same sudden ending as soon as it starts. When I press enter after it ends I get this output:
Code:
[1]+ Done bin/mysqld_safe
