mysql default install, RH 7.3

I had to recently reformat my HDD and reinstall Linux, so i decided to go with the default install of MySQL, but I cant get it to run. Unlike installing from the precompiled binary, everything is kind of scattered around, all the mysql* commands are in usr/bin (no big deal) the databases are somewhere else ( i know where to find em). Everything is there im sure, but when i try the safe_mysqld command, the damn thing wont start, i get the following:

===================================================

[root@localhost bin]# safe_mysqld
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
021116 10:07:44 mysqld ended

[root@localhost bin]#

====================================================

It basically ends just as fast as it starts. Could anyone tell me the steps I need to take to get the installation working the way it was installed by RH.
