I'm back again.
rpm -q tells me gcc-3.2.2-1 is installed.
I rpm -e'd it then installed it again and now installing perl (because the make didn't work ) (the makefile.pl said in it's comments that a threaded verstion of perl had to be 5.3 or higher) I get this:
