Problem solved; question about PHP
OK, it was simpler than I thought. If you bring up the new server window and just hit enter without filling anything in, it fills in the name 'localhost' for you under the heading 'Host'. This is where I was stuck. I may need help later, but for now I think I can go to the next step with the GUI; it's similar in a lot of ways to SQL 7.0, but it has the advantage of being platform independent (mysql and mysqlcc). There isn't a lot of documentation for the mysqlcc GUI yet, but the developers at MySQL AB have it on their list of things to incorporate into a future version.
I've seen a lot of references and books on PHP with regard to this thread topic. This will sound very ignorant, but I'm confused as to what PHP is and what it does. Eventually I'll have to find out, but in the meantime I'm messing around with MySQL and the mysqlcc GUI. Would anyone be willing to briefly enlighten me on the role of PHP in the MySQL scheme of things?
