MySQL and Linux(RH7.3) start

Hello

Yestarday I started to learn MySQL database. I downloaded the file from www.mysql.com ( MySQL-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm) installed
[root@localhost local]# rpm -qa | grep MySQL
MySQL-3.23.52-1

Also, as I understand the MySQL daemon is running:

[root@localhost mysql]# ps -aux | grep mysql
mysql 5023 0.0 0.3 10576 1008 pts/2 S 15:43 0:00 /usr/sbin/mysqld
mysql 5025 0.0 0.3 10576 1008 pts/2 S 15:43 0:00 /usr/sbin/mysqld
mysql 5026 0.0 0.3 10576 1008 pts/2 S 15:43 0:00 /usr/sbin/mysqld
root 5071 0.0 0.2 1760 588 pts/2 R 15:49 0:00 grep mysql
[root@localhost mysql]#

My Question is why command like "show databases"; // doesn't work ?
or "USE mysql;" //doesnt' wor. In other words, almost all command doesn't work. Therefore, I think something wrong.

And How can I stop, start and restart MySQL.

[root@localhost mysql]# whereis mysql
mysql: /usr/lib/mysql /usr/share/mysql

Where is mysql database is ?

Last Question: I read book "MySQL in 21 days" by Mark Maslakowski
And in this book he install MySQL in mysql-3.22.23b-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz (tar.gz) format and I did in "rpm" format. Mark Maslakowski mentions that directory mysql should containt these files:

ChangeLog bin lib mysql-for-dummies
INSTALL-BINARY configure manual.htm scripts
PUBLIC data manual.txt share
README include manual_toc.html sql-bench
Support-files tests

However, no such files in the directory. Is it normal ?

Thanks

Can you login to the MySQL database? At a command prompt type:

mysql -u root

This should give you a "mysql>" prompt where you can issue the commands you listed.

Be careful if the the machine is connected to the internet, the MySQL database is "wide-open" by default.
