See if there is an option to run that script in a more verbose mode:
mysql.server --help
man mysql.server

It gives me this error when sometimes.

No mysqld pid file found. Looked for /var/lib/mysql/linux.pid.

What is the linux.pid ? I don't have one in that folder.

The pid file stores the process id of the mysql process. It is also used by mysql to check if it is running or if did not stop gracefully. You may want to check to see if there are any meaningful messages /var/lib/mysql/linux.err.

Also verify that the userid running mysql has read/write authority to /var/lib/mysql/

Hope this helps.
