my Virtualbox preserved a deleted machine

I deleted my VirtualBox Windows XP virtual machine, because it was crashing and I wanted to delete and remake it. The second time, before I could insert the Windows XP CD, the virtual machine took me straight to Windows XP. How did it do that?--I thought I deleted Windows, leaving the VM blank.
So, the virtual Windows XP is still there. There's the thing on the Virtualbox main screen which you click on to start the virtual OS. It says "Powered Off" or "Powered On." I deleted that, but the virtual hard drive I created, which has the filename XP.vdi, didn't delete. I'm befuddled. How am I supposed to delete the virtual machine and start all over?

I would usually go to :

/home/knudfl/.VirtualBox/VDI/

and delete the 'WindowsXP.vdi' .

I'm not sure, it's the only correct method,
but then it is gone ... and doesn't use hd
space any more.

And will never start again !
....
