My video playback is messed up

i installed suse 10.2 yesterday, then i tried video playback after installing vlc, and xine from packman. VLC was all crappy, and skipped frames, it was going like crazy, so i installed kaffeine, and it worked fine, then i loaded a .avi file and something ended my X because i got sent to the login window. Then i logged back in and tried to play another movie and it was really crappy, this picture is an example, it happens with kaffeine too:

Any help?

my sys specs:

suse 10.2
pentium D, 2.8ghz
2048mb of ram
ati radeon x1650
ati drivers installed and runnning ok.

Wrong codecs, obviously. Same happens to me on occasion, in which case I temporarily pick a different player. Using vlc and mplayer alone, however, I can play everything.

Have you tried mplayer and mplayerplug-in?

Kaffeine crashes whenever you try to play anything that it hasn't got the necessary codecs for. Did you install w32codecs? ffmpeg? theora? But even so, there will be things that it can't play - it's just more limited than mplayer and vlc.
