I'm real new to Linux. I've had Mandrake 8.0 on my system. I purchased 8.1, I get to almost the end of the installation then I get this-

right after preparing bootloader I get a black screen with

/tmp/imo.o: init_module: no such device
/tmp/ppa.o: init_module: no such device

then the system freezes

My free support fron Mandrake said I should try Ctrl+Alt+F7 or F8,

no such luck, I have not got another answer yet.

I had no problems with 8.0

The mystery with 8.1 goes on. I'm not bold enough to try installing in expert mode, since it partitioned my main hard drive and erased everything.

You say that you're not bold enough to install using expert mode. Honestely, there's nothing to it. There's a little box at the bottom that tells you everything that's going on, and everything that you need to know about it. The partitioning bit is a complete doddle. When you get to DiskDrake, all you need is one partition (RED) mounted on /.

As for the errors, it's trying to load a kernel module ('driver') for a couple of scsi interfaces, and can't find the devices. If you install with Expert mode, you can say 'No, I don't have any SCSI interfaces', or if you do, you can select which.

I really would advocate the use of Expert mode. Just make sure you read everything first. You'll be surprised at how easy it is.
