Unhappy My KDE keeps idling and apps take forever to load. crashes on InitSystemServices too.

Hi everyone.
I downloaded the 2 DVD version of Debian Linux 3.1 a few weeks ago and I have a few very nasty problems.

Just yesterday I installed my internet(pppoe) and since then my system has been acting really weird.
I had this problem a few times even when I didnt have an inet conneciton, but an init 6 command usually fixed it.

Now different apps or things in my KDE start crashing randomly as soon as I start pppd call dsl-provider and generally starts almost every application around 2 minutes after I click.
For example my taskbar refuses to respond sometimes, when Konqueror calls out Kget to download a file they both idle for around 2 minutes before they start. Same is with Amarok and most programs.

All I know is that it is network related. I dont know if it is related, but I have 2 entrys in /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.2 spoon which is my hostname I added because GNOME wouldnt start unless I added it in hosts.

Another problem I have is that my CUPS print system woun't start, but I think its related to the thing above.(my kcontrol keeps printing out that CUPS is unreacheable).

Thx in advance folks, and if you have a spare minute, can you help me with the thing below too?

the other problem I have is that the kernels I compile woun't run at all. when I was using mandrake I had no problems, but debian doesnt compile them rite or something. Any 2.6.x kernel stops at kernel panic-no root device. I don't understand why it can't find my sata disc at ide0.
And last, can someone please link me a post where it's explained how to tweak vieo refresh rates, since I can't increase it more then 85hz.

Wow, I thought 3.1 was stable I know this isn't a direct answer to your problems, but is there a reason you're using 3.1? It's kinda old and I really wouldn't put myself through the pain of using it on a desktop machine (although all of my servers use it). For a desktop I'd recommend grabbing a net install of Debian testing and maybe even move that over to unstable once it's installed. Also you could try Ubuntu. I'm using Edgy Eft (due out stable next month) on my desktop and it's working pretty good
