My alsa is very quiet

Straight to business-
I installed gentoo with 2.6 kernel and only alsa enabled. I boot into my new install and the sound is very quiet. I also don't have the utilities alsamixer and others, or at least find / -iname 'alsamixer' doesn't find anything.

Since I'm using kde I startup kmix and crank the output and i get very wimpy xmms sound, and, well, all my sounds are wimpy. Anyone have this/solve this or have suggestions?

do you have amixer on ur comp?

If you use alsa (as opposed to oss ect) you should be able to run alsamixer as root.

I had to set up more than just the max volume mixer bar (not at home now or I woudl tell the the exact one sorry) to get volume to play normally. It was one of the ones a bit to the right....if you can pull it up try playing with it.
