1 - From what I've read on the forums, gtk-gnutella comes highly recommended for file sharing. You can do a search on freshmeat.net for "gnutella" and you'll get a good number of clients.
2 - I believe you can have different clients if you're using the gnutella network.
3 - If you are friends and live next door from one another, why not set up ftp access for one another on each others machine and ftp the files? For the sake of security, just don't set up anonymous ftp access.
