music over samba share problem
Okay, I've reached the end of my technical abilities with my Linux set up.
Real simple network...
Running RedHat RHEL3.0 knockoff (Centos3) as a file server using Samba shares (3.x I believe). Connected directly into a port on a Linksys wireless router in my closet. Machine is 1.5 Ghz I believe, 512mb ram. Not quite the dinosaur yet.
Desktop is brand-new AMD64, lots of ram -- you get the picture. Connected to network via one Linksys 5-port switch, then up to a port on the wireless router. Running WinXP pro with samba shares working fine.
I run into some issues when I try to play .MP3 or .M4A files off of the samba share -- songs will play for a length of time, then hiccup or lock up for a few seconds.
Suspected this was a connection/negotiation issue.
Forced NIC on file server to use 100/FD.
Still hiccups (like once every few minutes).
Played with smb.conf and put in/removed TCP_NODELAY, SO_RCVBUF --- you get the idea.
Still no dice.
All I want is the dang thing to stream the music so I can listen on the desktop while I work. You would think it would do so without sounding like an LP skipping, right??
Anybody have any ideas I haven't thought of or experienced similar issues with Samba shares??
Many thanks !!
