Multiple Thunderbird setups Solution across OSes
hello,
I need help with unifying my thunderbird accounts in a single laptop. i have one laptop, with 2 OSes (Fedora 16 and Linux Mint) and Both have thunderbird 13.0.1. I want to be able to use both thunderbirds without causing any problems with each other. I use pop3, and I do not want to switch to IMAP to achieve this What I mean is, mail downloaded from one OS must not become unavailable when I am using thunderbird from the other OS. Both Thunderbird softwares on Mint and fedora must show all the mail. how do I set about achieving this? Any help is greatly appreciated |
I cannot recommend this, and it may well cause problems and you must back up your mail completely before trying it:
You could try to open your profile directory on your Windows drive, or the Mail directory within it, under Linux and set it as Thunderbird's profile. I did this years ago with a Windows 2000 NTFS drive and Ubtunu and it did work but occasionally Windows would complain about the NTFS drive's metadata. No idea how dangerous it is now. |
eh?

I'm sorry, no idea what I was thinking.
Yes, pretty much as I said but ignoring the problems with Windows file systems. Just point both Thunderbird versions at the same profile folder. I think this may help: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbir...older_Location Edit: I tend to share my home directory between whichever distros I'm dual booting and so have shared Thunderbird profiles a few times that way. |
Thank you, 273,
Your idea works perfectly! :) I did this: As per the instructions in the link, I copied my profile and my local mail folder to a separate directory on an ntfs partition I had, and pointed the ./.thunderbird/profiles.ini file to the same. Then, I copied this ini file to my other OS. Now, Its as if I am opening the same mail client no matter which OS i am on! cool! It prevents repetitive downloading of same mail, and missing mail! :) Thank you once more! |
You're welcome, just be careful when Thunderbird updates a major version on one system but not the other. I've not lost any email yet but you never know.

I'll keep that in mind, 273!
