multiple md raid arrays

I am setting my system up with md raid. I successfully created and activated the first array. when trying to create a new array, I encountered a problem. What device name do I use for the second array? the first one is called /dev/md0, so I assumed that the second could be called /dev/md1, but I get a message telling me that this device does not exist. what am I doing wrong?
