multiple gateways

has anyone else had a problem with kernel 2.6 and ip route2 I can't seem to make multiple gateways work. Here is my setup

2 gateways
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.254

So I try to run ip route as such:

Code:
ip route add default scope global nexthop via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 weight 1 \
	    nexthop via 192.168.1.254 dev eth0 weight 1
as you can see I only have 1 network card in my computer but both gateways are connected to a switch. What am I doing wrong that I always get:
Code:
RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument
Thanks,
John
