MultiMedia Software

I am trying to do some things that I did with windows.

1) Listen to streaming broadcasts over the net. I used Windows Media Player, and Real Player to listen with windows. What is available for Linux RH 8?

2) Join chat rooms (ie. Jacksonville Jaguars) that require java. Does RH 8 have java capability?

I am extremely new, so tia for your help.

RealPlayer is available for linux, pretty cool eh?

Also, mplayer will play streaming media, as well as xmms and a few others. Check out www.icecast.org for more on that.

Yes, java is available on Linux, it's a little quarky for some people but I think there are enough threads on here about it that you could pretty well walk your way through it.

The plugin info that you might need for Java in browsers is going to be browser specific. Check out the plugin info for mozilla for most of your more common browsers since alot of them follow that for their plugin abilities.

Cool

RH8.0 doesn't support Java2, but you can download the J2SE SDK 1.4.1 and after linking the libjavaplugin_oji.so to your /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/ than you can run anything that uses Java2.

1) There are plenty of applications for streaming media: mplayer, realplayer, xmms, zinf,...

2) Java2 will run on RH8. Unfortunately, they only ship the RPMs with the Pro version. Luckily you can pick up the latest version from java.sun.com. Strangely, the RH says that J2SE 3.1 is included. I think they mean 1.3. It's not the latest, but it does count as Java2.
