I have personally never used a computer operating system that did'nt have some
annoying eccentricities.. windows 95,NT,98,me,00,xp,atari/ gem, mac 8-10,
be-os, bsd, and 3 or 4 Linux distros.... all have had their own unique ups and downs
in different proportions. It was a personal desision for me to put up with the benifits
AND irritating crap that Linux had to offer because I felt like the problems I had in
windows (virus' , spys, worms, fragmentation, and the CLOSED-behind-the-scenes
inner workings) were issues I faced because of someone elses assumpions and agenda.
the problems you speak of with Linux are largely because of the nessecity of many of these programs
to be available and usable for numerous unix-linux flavors, and the installation of beta stuff instead of release.
these problems stopped me cold 5 years ago.
most larger linux distros have some kind of software automation feature.
today I use mandrake-linux and the urpmi software database/autoinstall feature.
I synthesize and compose music, watch DVDs and TV (still trying to record),
pull pics from my camera and doctor them, surf the internet, serve a web-page,
and set up a wi-fi hotspot for my workplace ALL IN LINUX, ALL FOR FREE.
I am as much a hacker/guru type as I am a purple flying monkey with octopus tentacles.
many people suffer from "M$ lock-in" where you come to believe that if it does'nt work like windows,
it must be lacking" like saying basketball is not a good sport because you cannot score
your desicions should be based on your priorities and personal needs.
from what I've seen, many people here will help you the best they can to solve individual problems,
but do not take too kindly to people with an FIX MY PROBLEMS OR I'LL TURN AROUND AND STOMP BACK TO THE SUPERIOR REALM FROM WHENCE I CAME! -type attitude.
it all boils down to........ - use what pisses you off the LEAST!
