Multi-boot grub2 destroyed on windows 7 reboot

have a multi boot env on an older dell and am trying to migrate to a new inspiron 570.

I dont think my problem is hardware but really scratching my head.

I think all is ok with just windows 7 installed.

Problem is, if I install Ubuntu 9.04 or 10.10 and run grub-install, all SEEMS ok until I bring up windows and then reboot--
MODULE NOT FOUND. I think this is equvalent to OS not found on older systems. Dell is shipping me another HD but I think the problem is
software, just not sure where.
--------
I create an ext4 partition (#4) and restore my Ubuntu into it w/fsarchiver.
I then use Parted Magic from USB to enable grub2 as follows:
(already root)
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
mount --bind /dev/ mnt/dev
mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
chroot /mnt
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda

___No errors___

I can then boot into Ubuntu ok.
If I boot into windows, it comes up FIRST TIME, on reboot I get MODULE NOT FOUND.
I can /fixmbr off the windows 7 CD to recover but lose Ubuntu multi boot when I do it.

Any ideas ???

Thanks, Howard

Windows 7 wipes grub2 mbr

Think this is related to launchpad bug 551721.
I do not see pc angel or dell recovery tool in services so still trying to sort this out.

Dell Datasafe utility overwrites grub2

solved by removing Dell Datasafe.

Thanks for posting back hhoyt - I keep getting nag screens to activate this, and have always "I'll do it later".
Now I have an excuse to remove it entirely .... :p

Update:

I contacted Dell. Apparently little interest, they suggested I contact billable Dell Solutions Station.

Would be happier if Dell had this in their Knowledge base, but I don't think they will follow up.

I understand Dell lack of interest in Linux dual or multi boot, but the problem prevents the system from booting and,
since it only happens on the NEXT boot of windoze, not real apparent to dummies like myself...
