MSN is changing its protocol tomorrow and the rumour is that third party clients will not be able to use MSN. Appartenly this is for security reason - bah! w!nd0z security!
Anyhoo, does anyone know what the effect on Gaim will be? I know it technically will not be able to access M$N on it, but is there maybe a way round it, or are we screwed?

yes we are aware of that. That's why I keep my fingers crossed.
Because I have a lot of friends at MSN, I don't like to idea of Microsoft forcing me to use their operating system + messenger, because I'd like to talk to my friends. (and yes, I really like the idea of jabber)
The MSN Messenger login consist of a handshake, where the client explains what features+protocol version it uses. If you make a client that pretends to be MSN 6 at Microsoft Windows, and supports the features (and secret challenges), you'll get connected anyway.

people may find a way to connect anyway, but the legalities of this are pretty obvious. Key words: "Intellectual Property" and "DMCA." --from the gaim site
The new messengers promised to work with the new msn 5/6 login system, and I'm not receiving those "Messenger upgrade" messages anymore in kmess (cvs version) from messenger@microsoft.com

The largest GUI Messenger clients in Linux; gaim, kmess, amsn and kopete are able to connect to MSN. It seams that Microsoft's own client -- MSN 4 is the only one having some disadvantages (because not everyone likes MSN 5/6)
If you compile gaim from source, you need to compile with SSL support to make it work

do you need to specifically tell it to include ssl ?
I just compiled from scratch and it gives me "error reading from server" - did I miss a flag on the make?

I think so, or the ./configure script didn't detect the SSL libraries at your system. I've noticed that the front page of gaim explains it explicitly, but a lot of people had problems with gaim (including me)
