AYTTM (formerly Everybuddy) is my favorite, because it handles MSN, AIM, Yahoo, and several others that I don't use. Also it doesn't show any of that screen name garbage or sounds or any of that other crap that MSN has.
Oh, by the way, the Gaim site doesn't have MDK 9.1 rpms for download but I have created one. shoot me an email or a message and I'd be glad to get it to you.
If you want MSN, you definitly want aMSN...
I tried it this somer and it realy sucked, so I went to kopete and Gaim, but gaim doesn't have file transfer over the msn network (and I can't live without it ).
so I tried the cvs of amsn, and it worked flawless, great interface and improvements since a few months ago!
if you want to install gaim with ssl support for msn....and you are running a rpm distribution...then here is a lean and quick howto...:
1)first get the latest version of gaim from their website and the latest versions of nss and nspr from rpmseek.com
2)install nspr followed by nss:
rpm -Uvh nspr*.rpm (substitute * with your version no. or just use tab to auto-complete)
followed by
rpm -Uvh nss*.rpm
These two should install without any hassle...
3)ok now comes installing gaim
type:
rpm -Uvh gaim*.rpm
if it instalss gr8...u r good to go...however in most cases it gives some dependency issues....check those...if it not something serious like gtk or glibc or gcc...or ssl then go ahead and do:
rpm -Uvh --nodpes gaim*.rpm and then you should be good to go....just type gaim from a shell and it should pop up the new version og gaim.
if on the other hand you had some major dependency issues in the step before the last one...then you have to check your system...however you should not see any of these problems in some of the latest distributions.
hope this helped
I installed gaim yesterday using apt-get. Every time I attempt to sign-on my MSN account I get the message "userid@hotmail.com has been disconnected: Error reading from server."
This is because your already have an old version of Gaim that doesn't connect to v.9 of the MSN protocol. Try downloading a newer version on http://gaim.sf.net .
I am sure there are rpms available for RedHat. Just install using the rpm -vU command...
I downloaded and installed the .74 version. Gaim still gives the same error. After synching with the server it says it is sending the password and after a while it says there is an error reading the server.
Any other suggestions?

hmm, strange... at first I would say it is the connection, but since he syncs it can't be. Sorry, can't help ya.
Most of this kind of problems are related to te protocol version, but If you are really running 0.74... it cannot be this.
Still, if you really want to use msn, use aMSN. This is a far better client (if it is used 4 msn only) then gaim. I really like Gaim, because of the different protocols supported, but MSN is best on aMSN. amsn.sf.net
aMSN sure does resemble MSN's Messenger but I think that overall I like GAIM better. Although I am going to use aMSN until GAIM supports files transfers. I read in an LQ thread that GAIM doesn't yet support this feature.
Gaim supports file transfer since .74 but not on the msn protocol. I have the same feeling... Gaim's look and feel is great, but aMSN's look and feel suxx.
Still, I prefer functionality over look and feel.
