Gaim works.

You have to set up your MSN account within Gaim before it starts though. First, you make an account for MSN.
If I remember correctly, your username will be your hotmail address, and your Alias will be the nick you want to be seen as on MSN.

Then all you do is go to Gaim's main screen and put in your hotmail address and password again. Then it should connect.

Yes, gaim works.. for your socks proxy, when you set up your account using the 'account' tool, expand the 'Show more options' and you will see an area for proxy input.
You will need to know your socks4 server and whether or not it requires validation with a username and password..
It also work with an http server..

Gaim actually does have problems with connecting to msn...from my experiences. amsn has gotten me connected through a proxy server but I use socks5 and http so I don't know if there is socks4 support.

problems with connecting to msn according gaim has to do with the configure options.

protocol not supported is a many heard failure.

In my case it was enough to compile gaim as following:

./configure --enable-ssl

then what you normally do

then start gaim and you are ready to login to the msn network.
