MS Works (wps format) in OpenOffice.org
 

I'm trying to open wps (MS Works 6 - I think) files in OpenOffice.org.

I've found a couple of suggestions including:
1) Use MS Word ... which I don't have ... to open and convert the files; NO GOOD.
2) Use word2x and latex2rtf in succession ... can't find any details to suggest this will work, looks a bit sloppy.

I was hoping there would be a OOo filter for this file format. On OOo site there's a page http://www.openoffice.org/files/docu...scription.html that seems to suggest there is a filter.

Does anyone know if this exists. Can you give me a link and tell me how to use the filter. A program of the form 'wps2rtf' would be an agreeable alterative.

I'll let you know how I get on with option (2) above.

Dude, I haven't done this myself, but it would appear that you need to convert the files to rtf first, then copy them over to your Linux box. The best link I could find on this topic was the following. -- J.W.

I'd found that already ... thanks for the effort though.

I want to import the docs not find open each one in Works and resave ... I'm rather of the "computers as labour saving devices" sort of opinion.

Well it was worth a shot, too bad it didn't pan out. I assume you've also Googled it, but I was unable to find anything of interest apart from the link I posted. Regardless of its relative merits, it seems as though Works just isn't all that widely used in the marketplace and thus there aren't a surplus of support tools for it.

I'm definitely of the same "PC's should save time and effort" line of thought, but perhaps at least at this point, the sad reality may simply be that there aren't any viable alternatives to the manual conversion approach. Hopefully that's not the case, but I couldn't find anything that seemed to do what you described, even though it seems like it should be a really straightforward operation. How do the documents look if you open them with a text editor? Sure, the spacing and everything will be off for indentations and the like, but otherwise, is it salvageable?

Now there is libwps to convert/import wps files

You could also use Oxygenoffice, it opens this file type! I found that in a german forum. Good luck!
