mplayer won't detect alsa on ubuntu

Hi,

When I run the configure script during the mplayer install, mplayer doesn't see alsa.
Now, alsa is there, its what I use for xine and xmms.

Does anybody have any ideas?

I'm running ubuntu dapper - I'm doing this from source, not a package.

If you are building mplayer from source, make sure you have the alsa-lib development tools loaded. In most distributions, the headers and linkable libraries are separate from the main libraries.

I do have the development files for alsa installed. I think Ubuntu is using a different name
for the alsa header files, and I'm not sure which one mplayer wants.

Getting kind of confusing.
