mplayer with xv codec gives black screen

I want to have real full screen videos so I need to use the xv driver. The first video works fine but then you have to click to make mplayer show the video or you'll just get a black screen. The sound continues normally. Does anyone know how to fix this?

You can use other drivers to get full screen. I have a computer that 'xv' just flat out doesn't work (still don't understand why) but it has a GeForce 5200 (and I have OpenGL enabled) so I just use vo gl2. Full screen and no problems.

I don't know offhand which ones support fullscreen or not, but just do

Code:
$ mplayer -vo help
and it will show you all the options you could use. I'd just keep trying until you find one that works.

Afterwards, I'd recommend making an alias in your ~/.bashrc file, so mplayer will ALWAYS use -vo new_vo rather than xv (I think you can also modify a certain file, but I don't really know the name off-hand) without having to type -vo new_vo.

The problem was the xv codec is the only one that gives me true full screen. The rest of the codecs just fills anything but the normal sized film up with black. So I was still watching a small resolution. That's why I wanted to use xv.

I think it's a GUI problem cause when I run from the command line it works and doesn't black out when a new movie is played.

In that case, just don't use the GUI anyway. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't really a point to it anyway :P
