mplayer with dual heads

I just recently aquired an old 1mb trident tgui 9440 pci graphics card and set it up to run along side my rage 128 pro card in the agp slot. it seems to work fine but oddly enough when i play some videos (mpeg only i believe? i'll have to do some more tests to verify that) on the primary head the video first starts to get a little distorted and then real jumpy with weird colors and then the monitor will shut off entireley, the system then becomes unresponsive (the secondary head stays on, and you can move the mouse over to it but you cant do anything). i dont have this problem if i play the files on the secondary head although it is of a vastly smaller resolution then the primary so it is preferable to run them on the primary (my desktop is not Xinerama, just two different desktops and the mouse can move between them). it seems that i can play avi files on the primary head without much trouble, i watched two divx's on it without any of hte symptoms with the mpeg. I also noticed that i cannot utalize the highest resolution i could before with the primary head, i used to be able to do 1280x1024 but now it refuses to go past 1024x768 with the dual heads, i've heard of this problem in the past but paid little attention as to the solution, is there any way to get around this?
thanks in advance

hard to say what he problem really is, but i'd be more than inclined to just plain blame the crap trident card. bin it. If you just want a cheap replacement get something that just rubbish, not somethign that's appallingly bad in every way imaginable... possibly as its such low memory on the card and so old there is no way to run xvideo on either card and so the performance is afected right across the board. you can pick up a cheap sis card of ebay for next to nothing, 8mb, 16mb... should do you fine if it's just to mess around with.
