MPlayer video playing problems

I've installed MPlayer with all codecs, without any trouble. When i type #mplayer video.avi[or .mpg], the sound plays correctly, but instead of window with video, there is a stripe with violet-orange something, which looks like that movie.Mplayer plays this way all movie types [xvid, divx etc
] i found on my hard disk, so i dont think its problem of codecs. Please, has any1 any idea how to solve this problem ?

are you using kde or gnome?? may need to set the
file associations......have you tried just clicking on the .avi/.mpg file to get it to play??(instead of using command line)
