MPlayer sound is garbled

The sound for mpg video files is garbled when I play them in MPlayer. The sound for a DVD is fine. How do I fix this problem? I have tried the alsa9 and the oss sound plugin but it's the same problem.

Are you sure its not the actual video file? Try using a differnet sound device or increasing the sound buffer
man mplayer for more information on how to do that

I am positive that it's not the file. Xine plays these files and the sound is great. How do I increase the sound buffer or change sound devices?

I think you have to change it through the terminal, theres a gui for mplayer too I don't use it though so I'm not sure if you can alter settings through that if you have apt-get installed try:

apt-get install mplayer-gui
