Mplayer running chunky

When i use Mplayer to play DVDs it works like a charm, i can resize the playing window to any size without loosing any quality, but when i play a downloaded movie in .avi format and i put it on fullscreen i can see something resembling 1cmX1cm pixels, in other words it looks "chunky" the picture is not smooth. The same movie plays "smooth" in fullscreen on my friends computer in Media PLayer (windows). Is there a option or a flag to pass to mplayer to "smoothen" the output?
Thanks in advance
