Hmm, ok I think I messed this up pretty bad. I compiled and/or installed mplayer wrong and didn't use (or know about, at the time) checkinstall, so I just downloaded a Slackware package from linuxpackages.net. My problem is that mplayer still tries to run the first installation's files... I'm not even sure where they all are, so I can't delete them. I'm really new to compiling, and linux in general. Is there a way to link the mplayer command to my newly installed package that has the correct config and codecs, or am I screwed out of mplayer?
Ok, first I downloaded the source and compiled it myself, using make install to install it. I was getting some errors, mostly it couldn't find the right directories or any of the codecs I supplied. So I downloaded a pre-packaged mplayer made for Slackware, and installed it using KPackage. But all of the mplayer commands are still pointed towards my messed up installation. When I try to run gmplayer I get:

I'd rather just delete or ignore my messed up copy and go with the packaged one I downloaded. And I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot, I just don't know the linux basics yet. Any suggestions?
If you open up either README or INSTALL before you install it, it will tell you exactly what to do. I myself use src packages. I hate the rpms(and I cant use 'em). Usually you have to run either ./configure, ./config, or something similar, than make (all). And than install. And you have to run the make's while you are root.
It sounds liek you didnt run ./configure when you had the src's. I would go back to those, and re-read the README and INSTALL, so you know the correct way to compile/install it. (I might skip the readme if the install had enough info in it. The readme for mplayer is really big, I believe.)
That's what I did the first time. I followed the directions, ran config, make, and make install in root without any errors.. that's what confuses me. Everything compiled and installed smoothly (at least I thought), it just doesn't run without a screen full of errors. Is there a way to uninstall mplayer since I used make-install instead of a rpm? I want to get it off of my computer before I reinstall it again.
