MPlayer problem

For some reason I guess I do not know the format of the commands to get MPlayer running. Can anyone give me some tips on how to have a simple mp3 fole play with MPlayer. I do not have the gui installed and if that will make it easier then I will do that but right now I get nothing when I type the commands. There is something about a missing mplayer.conf file but I searched and it is not on my machine anywhere.

PLS HELP!!!
Thanks in advance

you should be able to just do
mplayer /path/to/file.extension

mplayer can autodetect file types

also, you may just want to install gui if that is what you are looking for... in mplayer's source folder do
make clean
./configure --enable-gui
make
su
make install
exit

then extract a theme into
/usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin

you may need to symlink Skin to default in that directory

Also, I believe mplayer will play everying if you type
>>mplayer /path/*.mp3 or just *
