mplayer on Vector Linux 4.0

Just installed Vector Linux on the roomie's computer (dual boot with win2k) and added mplayer via pkgtool. When opening a video it locks the box up tight (have to hit the reset button). I'd tried Slackware 9.1 on that same machine last week and mplayer worked (albeit slowly). Is this a known problem for that package? I was under the impression that Vector used slack packages... though I suppose they may be not be exactly the ones slackware uses. This is my first foray out of the .RPM based distros. The machine's kinda old... AMD k6 300/voodoo3000 video card, old yamaha clone on the sound card that AFAIK there's no linux driver for... but it still all seemed to work on Slack but the sound (slow but still faster than in Windows) but I took Slackware off beacuse no text would show up on any of the menus when running X. Would building it from source be the best route? Do you think it would make any difference? thanks in advance.

more than likely it's somehow hitting a video output that is conflicting somehow.... try using x11 output ( -vo x11) and see how that goes. also try -vo xv if you're not already.

Thank you for the reply acid_kewpie. Unfortunately, using either of those options freezes it up even sooner. Just using mplayer <filename> would get to where the video window would pop up and freeze, using the options it freezes almost instantly. I'm going to try building it from source. I'd try xine but i can't seem to find a package for Vector and mplayer's easier to build. (to me anyway).
