I have read the threads about mplayer and they are just about incomprehensible. And I hear the people who created it are not very newbie friendly. Well anyway, I downloaded the source .bz2 for mplayer, version .92. I did a ./configure, a make and then a make install. So I try this : mplayer Panama.wma and I get the following from mplayer.
[root@localhost scratch]# mplayer Panama.wma

I know you may not want to hear this, but switch over to Mandrake 9.1 and it is easy to install MPlayer via the Mandrake Control Center. After that, you just download the all-in-one codec pack and I can play any media files, including Windows only media files.
Other than that, I, myself, could not understand how to compile mplayer and do it via the console. Too complicated for me.
You don't need to switch just for mplayer [that's silly if you ask me] ~ It is not too hard.
You don't have any codecs installed.

Reading /usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory]
Did you download and install:
mplayer
the gui
and the codecs?
Realplayer9 codecs work.
GET THE FOLLOWING:
GOT TO ~ www.mplayerhq.hu >> download >> MPlayer RPM packages for Red Hat
download:
mplayer-common (1192 KB)
mplayer-gui (1831 KB)
default skin package (213 KB)
Thanks for the advice. I have given up on mplayer. Just to difficult to work with. I seems as though kscd will play the cd's I cut in Windows. Someone should make an easy way to get this package, download the essentials and compile it. It seems as though I have managed to get .92 on my computer somehow, but it doesn't work. The people who created this should know better. I tried to follow Mossy's advice and I had a hard time finding the packages. When I found what I thought were the correct ones, I got the following
[root@localhost scratch]# ls -ltr mplay*
-rw------- 1 Jim Jim 1213582 Oct 17 20:47 mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm
-rw------- 1 Jim Jim 1865022 Oct 17 20:50 mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm

-rw------- 1 Jim Jim 5129528 Oct 17 20:55 mplayer-codecs-extralite-1.0-1.i386.rpm
[root@localhost scratch]# rpm -i mplayer-common*.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
mplayer = 1.0pre2 is needed by mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1
Please, don't recommend this package to anyone. It is really poor and none of the advice I have gotten from anywhere gets me close to getting this thing working with a gui. I might be a dummy, but this just don't work. Thanks everyone again for your replies.
As a followup, just to show how inane this package is, take a look at this.

Thanks again for your response. If you know of any other packages that I can use instead of this turkey, I would be more than happy to try it. Thanks again.
I tried it after downloading a new copy and here are the results.
[root@localhost scratch]# rpm -ivh mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm

I changed your command to rpm -ivh mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm because I got the 'common' from the rest of the post. I did then download only mplayer-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm and tried again. Still got the same results
[root@localhost scratch]# rpm -ivh mplayer-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 28a26067

I did a system reinstall over the weekend to clean out a lot of stuff I had on my system, so the system should be pretty clean. Thanks again for the response.
simple as that. You really shouldn't be annoyed with mplayer for not being able to play WMA's... it is a microsoft format and so very hard to program with. at the same time though, if you actually set mplayer up correctly it CAN play wma file superbly.
Thanks again for your help. Well I did get it installed, including the codecs and the gui. I started up the gui, opened a wma file and it didn't make any noise. In the dropdown options list, it did have wma files. I know my speakers are on because I have a wav file when I start up. Not sure why it isn't making any noise. I might have to play with it over the weekend. Thanks again for the help.

Good luck
Same (better actually) in 9.2.
Although it wouldn't justify switching, it's useful to know for anyone about to start with linux or looking for something else to try.....
Thanks again for the response. I do get sound, I will try other formats this weekend. Not sure what you mean by " make sure all your volumes are up acrossthe spectrum."
To the two Mandrake people.,
No, I am not going to switch to Mandrake. I already had a couple of versions of Mandrake on my HD, but I am not going to trust a French company who is in constant monetary crisis with my money, which is the only way you get anything outside of the distro. Also I did have some problems with Mandrake also. Every distro has troubles. I moved to Linux from Windoze to eliminate a lot of problems.
My experience of Mandrake was excellent on my old HD. The only reason Im on RH9 now is that I could not find Mandrake in the shop and I could not get a good download or copy. I think I preferred it alittle over RH9.
Anyhow - what I meant is that you should check the volume controls and make sure any relevent levels are up.
