I am using Slackware 12.1. Recently installed mplayer and smplayer. Also copied all codecs files to /usr/lib/codecs. But mplayer is not playing .avi or .flv files. (It is playing .mpg files)
These files are played in xine and vlc although xine runs very slowly and drops frames in fullscreen mode.

I am using x11 as video output driver

Few commands which I tried and its output are:

$ mplayer -vo x11 <filename.avi>
MPlayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: uninit_vcodec

$mplayer -vo xv <filename.avi>
VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read
[VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
[VO_XV] See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
[VO_XV] Try -vo x11.
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

$xvinfo

no adaptors present

but

$xdpyinfo | grep XVideo
XVideo

I also added Load "v4l" to my xorg.conf file but no use

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)

I am really confused whether my system supports XVideo extension or not..

My system has 256 MB RAM with Pentium 4 processor. Please tell me how to enable xv in my system and also how to make mplayer play avi and other files...

Either attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a post here, or use a service like http://pastebin.com/ to show us the file.

It looks like you are specifying the vesa driver in the Device section of your xorg.conf file. You should switch that to the "intel" driver.

Thanks that solved problem of XVideo

But still mplayer is not playing avi files

Hopefully someone else can help you that. It appears that mplayer is crashing when trying to decode the video.

You know, you may want to consider updating slackware. The version you have installed is over a year and half old, after all.

Yeah... I will upgrade soon. But don't know whether Slack 13 (with KDE 4.2.4) will be as light as Slack 12.1 for my system

It's hard to say for sure (because it segfaulted), but you might be missing the xvid codec.

apt-get install xvid4conf libxvidcore4 libxvidcore4-dev

(for debian)
Or just download and compile/install them from videolan.org. Click on the developers link and it should list a number of usefull video stuff to download. Not for the faint at heart, but serviceable for the most part.

(Or just install / use VLC)
