mplayer installation

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
i have been trying desperatly to get mplayer to work. i honestly didnt want to post this here because know that it pry gets beat to death since most or all linux distros dont come with a media player. i am running redhat 9. i have downoaded it and extracted it ok, but when i type "./configure --enable-gui --with-gtk-config=/opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config --with-glib-config=/opt/gnome/bin/glib-config make make install" to compile the player it goes througha bunch of command lines and then it show me
gcc: ./configure:: No such file or directory
gcc: line: No such file or directory
gcc: 1:: No such file or directory
gcc: /opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config:: No such file or directory
gcc: No: No such file or directory
gcc: such: No such file or directory
gcc: file: No such file or directory
gcc: or: No such file or directory
gcc: directory: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [depend] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bake/MPlayer-0.92'
make: *** [version.h] Error 2

if i am going about it the wrong way or you would like to start all over with me then great. i am getting extremely frustrated and could really use some help before start to think windows wasnt that bad after all

The error message there doesn't make much sense. Could you post the lines before it? We need to see where it starts to go wrong. In fact if you could copy and paste the whole output in the terminal that would be great as then we could see what command you gave and what directory you were in at the time.

'config.h' and 'config.mak' contain your configuration options.
Note: If you alter theses files (for instance CFLAGS) MPlayer may no longer
compile *** DO NOT REPORT BUGS if you tweak these files ***

'make' will now compile MPlayer and 'make install' will install it.
Note: On non-Linux systems you might need to use 'gmake' instead of 'make'.

Please check mtrr settings at /proc/mtrr (see DOCS/video.html#mtrr)

Check configure.log if you wonder why an autodetection failed (check whether
the development headers/packages are installed).

If you suspect a bug, please read DOCS/bugreports.html.

I do not have the README file in front of me, but do you need these config options?
Code:
--with-gtk-config=/opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config --with-glib-config=/opt/gnome/bin/glib-config
I always just use the --enable-gui option. Your config says it is not finding /opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config

It's definately noy happy about gtk-config and glib-config. Are you sure they're in /opt/gnome/bin ? They're usually in /usr/bin

Yeah, it looks like you have the path to GTK and glib wrong. Try just ./configure --enable-gui and see if that works. BTW, that's the strangest error i've ever seen, since it appears that gcc was trying to compile an error message that configure printed out.

Just use YUM

It would be a lot easyier if you would just use yum to install mplayer

yum install mplayer*

Would solve most all of you problems. Only thing is that mplayer is not locateable in the default RPM repositories so you must edit you yum.conf file to include other repositories.

in the console type
links http://www.fedorafaq.org/samples/yum.conf

Then press ALT+F
Arrow down to save as and save the file to /etc/yum.conf

Then type yum update

For more instruction go here http://www.fedorafaq.org/

when i paste the elinks into the terminal, and the code pops up i pressed alt and f which took me to the file menu but there is no option to save or save as. i did go to the fedora faq and found the etc/yum.config and saved it in the directory. i was just reminding you that i have redhat 9. didnt know if it mattered or not.i then i tried to do yum update but it came out like this

[root@localhost root]# yum update

Have you given up on installing it from the source? The current version is 1.0-pre4 http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html These instructions work well for me http://lfs.securewebservices.co.uk/b...a/mplayer.html

You have to uncompress the Mplayer sources and then cd into them before you run ./configure. You might want to add --enable-gui like you were doing before or it won't build the graphical user interface.
Code:
./configure --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc/mplayer \
    --enable-largefiles --enable-shared-pp --enable-gui &&
make &&
make install &&
make -C libavcodec/libpostproc install
the instructions for installing the skin assume you've got them still compressed alongside the uncompressed Mplayer sources that you've just cd'd into...if that makes sense. If I'm not making sense I'm sorry, it's late. Good luck.

Well if the MPlayer-1.0pre4tar.bz2 source is in your home folder, open a terminal and

tar xjf MPlayer-1.0pre4.tar.bz2
cd MPlayer-1.0pre4
