mplayer -idx switch?

what does the -idx option with mplayer do? I noticed when freevo calls mplayer it uses the idx option. This is causing a movie of mine not to play. What does this option even do, is it nessesary?

I was lucky enough to find it in the mplayer man pages. that doc is so huge, it can be tough to find stuff in it
Quote:
-idx (also see -forceidx)
Rebuilds index of files if no index was found, allowing seeking. Useful with broken/incomplete downloads, or badly created files.
NOTE: This option only works if the underlying media supports seeking (i.e. not with stdin, pipe, etc).
