Mplayer Hissing Sounds
Whenever I play a .bin of an SVCD or VCD the sound hisses. It's not the image because I have burned them an played them through Mplayer and a DVD Player and they work fine. I have tried OSS and Alsa as the outputs and neither have seemed to work. I'm using SuSE 9.1 and usually run KDE.
|
do you have dma enabled on your hard drive?
hdparm -d1 /dev/hda also, can I ask how you mounted the bin? I thought only iso's could be mounted. |
Mplayer will play .bins and .dat files as well. Nice side effect of using it. :D
|
Should I enable DMA on both the drive in which the .bin is being played from, or the drive in which mPlayer is on. And mPlayer can play .bin's but a way to mount them is cdemu.
|
It wouldn't hurt to enable DMA on both drives. In fact, you'll probably see a small increase in general performance, (but it might not be whats causing the hissing sound...)
|
You should enable dma on any drive that's capable of handling it, as you're machine will react so much faster.

DMA is not this guys problem. This is a documented Fedora bug. I just read an article from osnews.com that gave the same problem. here is an excerpt
========== Of all of FC2's warts, this has turned out to be the most annoying problem. I don't know how many people suffer from it, but it happens with every sound card I have. I hereby thank Peg Gallo for sending the fix to me: In KDE, start KMix (Main Menu --> Sound & Video --> KMix), click the Input tab, and check the "Advanced" box. You will see one or more devices called "IEC958." One of them is the culprit; turn them off until you find the right one. ========= Link: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=04/06/24/1638255 Fedora Core 2, Making it Work |
" This is a documented Fedora bug"
Explains why I haven't come across it in all my distro-hopping. I've never tried on the hat... |
I am currently running SuSE 9.1. I havn't updated my side thing. But I'll read about turning off that thing and return with my results.
|
Turning off IEC958 did not seem to do a thing. I may try booting into a Knoppix CD and seeing if it's a SuSE problem also. Any other suggestions would be nice.
