mine used to do this too.. till I upgraded Mplayer and all its codecs, and properly configured it.. turning off some of the "for playing files" sort of features that the help files tell you to turn off if you have problems.
when i play gmplayer in the console, this is what i get when playing a dvd

then it Caches a bunch.... and wont play ver smooth

They don't tell you this, but you need to download some kind of file. Before Mandrake 9.2 ruined my computer, I got this file and installed it and was able to play DVD's with no problem. I, myself, am looking for this thread somewhere in this forum (that's how I found out about this problem). If I find it I'll post the link.
